KOTOR 2 Spoiler-Free Build

Installation Instructions

If you were linked to this list directly without reading the install instructions, please go back and read them here. There are some setup and general best-practice steps you need to be aware of before beginning the install process.

IMPORTANT: PC Version Notes & Fixes

KOTOR 2 has an update on Steam and GoG which adds native controller and widescreen support. While this seems helpful, it's unfortunately caused several other problems: lightsaber hilt texture mods don't function with the new version, some effects like fog have been removed, save games are sometimes lost temporarily, it can cause or exacerbate issues with in-game dialogue skipping, and rarely users experience extreme and irreparable stuttering and screen tear.

Most of these problems are fixable, or at least have workarounds. For example, to ensure saves aren't lost, disable cloud saves, and to fix skipping dialogue, simply restart the game. With that said, there is no workaround for using lightsaber hilt textures that doesn't break the game, and none at all for the rare irreparable stuttering, without reverting the patch.

I actively recommend against reverting the patch until you test to identify if you experience any errors; a few minutes in Peragus will tell you whether you have any of the bad ones, and you should check before you begin modding. Even if you have some minor problems, unless you have major stuttering/screen tear or are on a 1920x1080 display (the only display resolution which is supported for manual widescreen patching) I would recommend against reversion, as the widescreen support will probably more than compensate for any other issues. Nevertheless, should you choose to do so anyway, the reversion itself is easy. For Steam, simply navigate to KOTOR 2 in your Steam library, right-click and select properties, go to Betas and opt in to the "legacypc" beta; for GoG, you must be using the GoG Galaxy launcher, go to the game's options in GOG Galaxy, then Manage Installation, then Configure, and you can switch to the old version. This step will need to be completed before you begin modding. After the reversion is completed, you can manually restore widescreen functionality via UniWS—there will be a link to a video guide for doing so at the end of this build.

Before Installing

Please make sure that your main game directory and all subfolders are not set as read-only. Executable mods will need to modify the files therein directly to install properly. Windows often locks the settings on these folders, so for many systems it will not be possible to actually pull them out of their read-only state, but I still recommend at least attempting to change the folders, as on some operating systems this step is critical for a functional install.

It is critical to ensure that you only have ONE installation of KOTOR 2 on your device before beginning. If you have multiple installations, or even just two executables in different locations, TSLPatcher executables which are set up to auto-detect your installation directory will misidentify which one is correct and install the mods wherever they please, probably spiking your whole install in the process. If you want to make a backup of your vanilla gamestate, make sure to compress the entire game into an archive before starting the install process.

Please also note that the TSLPatcher executable utilized in the installation process of many of these mods (frustratingly) does not function on multi-monitor setups. If you have more than one monitor, you will need to disable your second while installing the mods, but you can re-enable it once the installation process is complete.

Do not, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, run the TSLPatcher executable from within a file archive (.rar, .7z, etc.). You must extract all archives before installing mod content, or running the TSLPatcher executable. Failure to extract before installing will break your game.

As a final note, please bear in mind: if you are asked to direct a TSLPatcher executable to a folder to begin install, that folder should ALWAYS be the main game folder, where your game's .exe file is located (or the symlink to that folder created in the Quicker TSLPatching step below). For mods that are NOT installed with the TSLPatcher, unless otherwise noted their loose-file contents are most often placed directly in the Override directory. Unless you are following specific instructions (the mod author's or my own) that state otherwise, you should not be placing files in the game's main directory or Modules folder. You should never have any subfolders inside the Modules or Override folders.

Known Bugs

  • Although all instances of this error should now be fixed, some textures may still have a partial transparency effect applied to them (you will be able to see through them, as if they were a hologram). If you encounter any instances of such textures please report them so I can fix any leftover cases.

Linux Players

For anyone attempting to install these builds on a Linux distro, I strongly recommend installing on a case-insensitive file system (I have had VFAT recommended as an option by other users). Otherwise you will need to go through the headache of renaming a huge number of files, and it's really not worth it.

Updating from a Prior Build

If you currently have a prior mod build version installed and would like to update to the current Revision, due to the importance of install order to the mod builds' function, there is unfortunately no way to do so without resetting to a fresh install and reinstalling the new build iteration on top. To do this, you will need to uninstall your game, then navigate to the game's install folder and delete any remaining contents; frequently, especially on the Steam release of the game, mod content will not be uninstalled as part of the application's uninstallation, or wiped when the game is reinstalled. If you do not both uninstall the game and wipe the directory prior to reinstalling, contents of the prior build can be left over upon the new build's installation and can lead to fatal errors during the install.

AMD Players

For some godforsaken reason, AMD cards are frequently crashing on current versions of KOTOR. While this doesn't happen on all AMD card types, if you get into the game and start experiencing random crashes while walking around and you've got an AMD card, sadly this is probably why. There is a solution, but it requires you to roll your driver version back to a set released prior to July 15th. I cannot give advice on how to do this, as the process is unique to your particular graphics card and I don't personally own an AMD device. Googling your graphics card and 'drivers' will probably get you where you need to go.

NVidia RTX Card Users

I am sorely sorry to have to include another warning for an entirely different series of cards, but here we are. For some insane reason which I cannot even begin to fathom, only on Nvidia RTX-series cards in the 20xx series, runtime errors are beginning to generate on module transitions (anytime a load screen is proc'd), typically when cutscenes are queued to play after the load. I am still not entirely sure why this is happening, but the problem only exists on this series of cards, so it isn't an issue with the builds themselves. As far as we've been able to diagnose to this point, there are three ways to attempt fix this: the most reliable & easiest is to go into Nvidia control panel, open program control, and set low latency mode to on/ultra. This reduces the render queue and seems to bypass the issue entirely on most setups. If that doesn't work, the second option is to put the game into windowed mode during the problem load screen--you can do this by going into your game folder, opening the .ini file with a text editor of your choice, and editing the line "Fullscreen=1" to =0, and adding the line "AllowWindowedMode=1" somewhere under the Graphics Options heading. The third option is to completely remove the movies folder from your game directory (don't delete it, just place it elsewhere), relaunch the game, and attempt the load again.

If all of these methods fail, your only recourse is to pull the whole override folder out of the game directory to attempt the load, but this is very risky as it could easily cause save instability--do this only as a last resort. You should take the exact following steps if you attempt this: make a save immediately before the load that crashes you; close the game; rename your override folder to "Test"; launch the game and load your save; complete the module transition sequence; save in a NEW SLOT, immediately close the game and rename the override back as it was before. I stress again: this method is an option of last resort, CAN cause save instability and it IS possible it won't even work to begin with, because you might be unable to even load your save before the crash. I mention this option only because users with this issue have previously been able to use this method successfully.

Total Filesize on Disk

For your reference, the total filesize of all mods before extraction, excluding movies, is approximately 7.8GB. Please bear this in mind if you intend to keep backups and/or are operating on a system with limited available memory. The total size of the install when extracted (plus HD movies in 1920x1080 resolution) is approximately 21.8GB.

Mod List

TSLRCM

Name: The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod

Author: zbyl2, DarthStoney, Hassat Hunter & VarsityPuppet

Description: The whole reason why you would mod KOTOR 2, the legendary mod that includes bugfixes, restored content, and altered scenes to return the game to what it was meant to be. This mod isn't just essential—it's mandatory.

Category & Tier: Bugfix, Immersion, Mechanics Change & Restored Content / 1 - Essential

Non-English Functionality: YES, but you must install the version of TSLRCM which corresponds to your language of choice.

Installation Method: Executable

Compatibility Warning: Recall that M4-78 is incompatible with this build; do not use it alongside TSLRCM! Remember also that the Workshop version of this or any other mod is NOT to be used!

Quicker TSLPatching

Name: Quicker TSLPatching

Author: xypherh

Description: This isn't a game mod, but rather a system workaround which makes it easier to install mods. This script will not work on Mac operating systems (neither Linux, I believe) not running Windows on a partition, but there are some comments in the Posts section of the download page that might offer alternatives that allow it to function properly.

Mods will frequently use the TSLPatcher installer, which requires you to point the installer at your game's base installation directory. Sometimes the patchers do this automatically, but sometimes they fail, which is where this script comes in; it'll create a symlink to your KOTOR and KOTOR 2 install directories direct to your desktop, where the TSLPatcher defaults to pointing, so you only need to scroll down and click the folder to install without navigating through your system's file structure. The script is confirmed safe and once your install is complete you can delete the desktop folders with no problems. If you utilized this fix for modding the original KOTOR, unless you deleted the linked KOTOR 2 on your desktop you won't need to reapply this.

Installation Method: Windows Registry Edit

Installation Instructions: Run the script and follow the instructions it presents, choosing your KOTOR directory in the first popup window and your KOTOR 2 directory in the second. If the script does not function for you, check the Posts section of the mod download page to see some alternate suggestions for manually forcing the functionality of the script.

TSLRCM Tweak Pack

Name: TSLRCM Tweak Pack

Author: Pavijan (update by Fair Strides)

Description: Reverts and otherwise modifies certain TSLRCM settings to make the game more sensible and internally consistent (mostly unrestoring content which was likely intentionally cut by Obsidian, and polishing some other things that don't make sense). Some information has been censored to prevent spoilers.

Masters: TSLRCM

Category & Tier: Patch / 1 - Essential

Non-English Functionality: PARTIAL - All components can be installed except for Mandalore Conversation.

Installation Method: Multi-Run TSLPatcher

Installation Instructions: The installer for this mod will need to be run 7 times, once to install each of the options we'll be using: Kaevee Removal Parts 1 & 2, Saedhe's Head, Atton at the End, Dialogue Tweak, Mandalore Conversation, and Extra 1 - SLM.

Saving Throw Fixes

Name: Prestige Class Saving Throw Fixes

Author: Rovan

Description: In KOTOR 2, the player character can unlock higher mysteries of the Force and achieve a prestige class, which amounts to an upgrade to one of the three default Jedi classes (Guardian, Sentinel, and Consular). For some reason, some prestige classes in KOTOR 2 have worse saving throws than their predecessor class. This mod fixes this, ensuring that the more advanced classes always have slightly better throws.

Installation Method: Loose-File Mod

Installation Instructions: I advise users to only install the Jedi Master/Sith Lord fixes.

Robes with Shadows

Name: Robes with Shadows for TSL

K2CP

Name: K2 Community Patch

Author: Multiple; A Future Pilot, DarthParametric and JCarter426 Curate

Description: A community bugfix and general improvement patch for KOTOR 2 meant to be a supplement to TSLRCM, fixing bugs that TSLRCM didn't catch or viewed too minor to address; highly recommended.

Masters: TSLRCM

Category & Tier: Graphics Improvement & Bugfix / 1 - Essential

Non-English Functionality: YES

Installation Method: TSLPatcher Mod

SPOILER WARNING: As a compilation mod, it's impossible to get sufficient permissions to censor this entire mod. DO NOT READ THE README OR MOD WEBPAGE, or spoilers are basically guaranteed. This is a TSLPatcher mod similar to the TSLRCM Tweak Pack (though this one only needs to be run once), so it's a simple install you shouldn't need further instructions for; just do your best to not read any component of it.

Installation Instructions: Remember, warnings during an installation are normal—errors are not.

Remote Tells Influence

Name: Remote Tells Influence and PATCH

Author: tk102, patch by Leilukin

Description: This is going to require a bit of an explanation. I personally believe this mod breaks immersion—so why add it? In KOTOR 2, companions have influence—a mechanic by which the player character can influence their allies, either to align with their views or grow hostile to them. Sadly, KOTOR 2's influence system is asinine. Major plot points are locked behind very high—or very low—influence with several companions. Your influence with companions is also extremely obfuscated, only really discernible by a companion's LS/DS alignment relative to your alignment, but this is a very buggy system which breaks with high Charisma values on the player, or with certain feats. There is no other way ingame to tell what your influence is without this mod. I mark it as optional because it does break immersion, but for many players I think having a system to determine influence will be extremely important for enjoyment of the story.

Reflective Lightsaber Blades

Name: New Lightsaber Blade Models

Author: Crazy34

Description: With this mod, Crazy34 walked into the community, slammed down one of the most impressive mods ever made for this game, and dared us to do better. Not only have they split the blade texture in two to allow for lightsabers with cores of a different color (currently unsupported in the build release, but hopefully coming soon), they've also added dynamic reflections to each and every lightsaber across almost every area of the game. When you're fighting a Dark Jedi, you're going to see your faces bathed in shifting colors, fading and brightening as you swing your lightsabers; when you ignite your saber in a hallway, it will reflect on the floor and walls, and will realistically increase in intensity as the blade draws nearer to the surface. This is an incredible project, and easily one of the most important—and impressive—mods ever released for KOTOR. In the next few years, it could completely change the face of lightsaber modding.

Harbinger Performance Fix

Name: Harbinger Arrival Performance Enhancement

Author: PapaZinos

Description: Very early on, you see what is undoubtedly the most ambitious cutscene the game ever attempts. With multiple module loads, split .bik movie cutscenes, panning and circling cameras, the arrival of the Harbinger is one of the most impressive visual sequences in the entire game, at least from a technical perspective. DSME

Description: For reasons of story, I find that a certain character comes off completely one-dimensional, ruining his own interesting character arc, unless he can express feelings of sentimentality for the main character. In the interests of presenting this character at their best, this mod causes the character to become obsessed with the player regardless of their gender. Upscaled Icon Overhaul

Name: AI Upscaled Icon Overhaul

Author: Pramod Marlon

Description: This mod uses AI upscaling to increase the resolution and quality of all of the over one thousand icons in the game, from Force powers to Feats to gear and lightsaber crystals. It does a wonderful job of it, and I only have one complaint—very small icons, such as when selecting items, can look a little pixelated because the resolution of the new icons is actually too large for downscaling to display them properly. In most of the normal situation where you would be seeing an icon, though, you won't notice that.

Companion Clothes

Description: Giving companions a unique version of their default clothes so they can keep their 'standard' look throughout the entire game while still having mechanically powerful equipment is a very common mod type. I typically don't like these mods, not because I disagree with the premise but because I tend to balk at +10 WIS modifiers on starting gear. Ol' Cappy, in my opinion, does it right here—these are unique clothes for most of the human companions which don't give insane bonuses, but instead small, rational, and most importantly balanced, lore-friendly and internally-consistent bonuses. These items are never going to be the best your team can get, but they are flavorful additions which will let you keep them in their default get a bit longer, if you so choose.

Description: The improved AI mod stops in-game characters from using weaker versions of feats (IE Flurry instead of Advanced Flurry), making characters that Obsidian deemed to be harder foes truly more difficult to defeat.

Category & Tier: Mechanics Change / 1 - Essential

Non-English Functionality: YES

Installation Method: TSLPatcher Mod & Loose-File Patch

Compatibility Warning: This mod has a minor incompatibility with TSLRCM which causes the player to sometimes be unable to select a third party member during a difficult fight sequence. Utilizing the KOTOR 2 Community Patch fully rectifies this problem.

Installation Instructions: The first executable you see is a self-extracting archive; when you find it, just run it and extract to the pre-listed folder (the one the mod is currently in). It will extract the TSLPatcher .exe which you will run as usual to install the mod. When the install is completed, move the patch file into your game's override directory and overwrite.

Do NOT use the version for High Level Force Powers; if you were planning on using HLFP, either remove HLFP (recommended) or DO NOT USE Improved AI. There is a compatibility issue when using HLFP and Improved AI together in this build.

Remove Duplicate TGA/TPC

Name: Remove Duplicate TGA/TPC OR Bash script for MacOS/Linux

Author: Flachzangen, bash version by /u/th3w1zard1

Description: This is a script written by Flachzangen which allows you to remove duplicate .TGA or .TPC files in your game directory. Files with the .TPC filetype take priority, so for several of the patches we've downloaded which are of the .tga filetype, we need to delete any .TPC duplicates in order to get them to read properly. That's what this script will do.

Category & Tier: Patch / 1 - Essential

Installation Method: .bat Patcher

Installation Instructions: Place DelDuplicateTGA-TPC (or the bash script version) in your main game folder (NOT override!), run it, say that TPC should be deleted and do not manually confirm. If you are on a Mac or other device that cannot run .bat files and the bash script is not an option for you to use, a list of all the files you will need to manually delete can be found here. **MAKE SURE THIS SCRIPT RUNS PROPERLY!

On some operating systems, overzealous antivirus setups, or filepaths with particular characters in them it may fail. If the file outputs "Finished, Press any key to continue" but does not list any files it deleted, it is not working, and if it does not work it will crash your game. You can try to resolve this by moving your Override folder to a different location (I recommend a subfolder in your Documents or Downloads directories), putting the .bat file there and running it through that directory, but if that doesn't work you will need to manually go through and delete the duplicates from the link above.

4GB Patcher

Name: 4GB Patcher

Author: Daniel Pistelli

Description: This is a program which modifies your game's executable file to be able to utilize up to 4 gigabytes of RAM, since KOTOR is a 32-bit application and by default can only utilize 2 gigabytes. This will help the game run smoothly even with the larger texture throughput this build creates, and also reduces issues caused by a memory leak which is native to the game, preventing crashes and savegame corruption.

Category & Tier: Patch / 1 - Essential

Installation Method: Executable

Installation Instructions: If you are not on Steam or have rolled your game back to the legacypc beta and intend to add widescreen support, proceed to the below section and FULLY apply your chosen widescreen resolution AND all additional widescreen support mods you choose to use BEFORE completing this step. Once you are done applying all your chosen widescreen content, you are then free to apply this patch.

Additionally, DO NOT apply the 4GB patcher with the Steam version of the game, unless you have rolled back to the legacypc beta AND applied the below widescreen patch! Without the modified widescreen .exe, Steam's executable copy is encrypted in such a way that executing this patcher will break it and prevent the game from launching. Although it's unfortunate to not have access to the patch, it doesn't introduce any fatal errors or shortcomings if you cannot use it; I recommend just being sure to exit your game and restart the application from the top once every four hours or so!

Optional Widescreen

If you want support for widescreen resolutions above 1280x1024 and do NOT own the game on Steam or GoG, or have rolled your Steam version back to the legacypc beta/GoG version back to the pre-patch, it's highly recommended that you follow the instructions presented in the following video. By using UniWS, you also avoid many of the issues caused by FlawlessWidescreen, including savegame corruption:

KOTOR 2 Widescreen Patch

Please ensure your desktop scaling is set to 100%—not higher, not lower—to ensure that the widescreen functionality displays properly in-game. On some operating systems, this can be avoided by right-clicking the application, going to compatibility, selecting Change High DPI Settings, and setting the override to be scaled by the application. If your OS does not allow this function, you will need desktop scaling set at 100%.

Also note that, upon application of widescreen, you will need to launch the game directly from the executable from that point on. This means, for instance, not launching the game through the Steam interface. This is due to the edits made by widescreen which break the handshake between Steam and the executable.

Widescreen Bugfixes & Extended Support Mods

Following the application of basic widescreen support, if you would like additional widescreen support mods (including high-resolution cutscenes), or if you've ever had the fullscreen bug (game crashing when playing cutscenes + general instability), see here for additional mods and methods which can improve widescreen and fix the fullscreen bug. Please note that these mods can ONLY be applied on game versions which do not have native widescreen support; you must apply UniWS for these to be usable!

Misc. Basegame Issues & Fixes

Crash After Character Creation

This is a common issue which users tend to think is caused by the mod builds, but 99.9% of the time you don't have a mod error, and this is a basegame issue. Sometimes the game refuses to load when you have the Frame Buffer Effects setting enabled, so just disabling it in your Advanced Graphics Options ingame will allow you to load the game. Disable it long enough to load the next area, then, if you'd like, save and re-enable it. It might fail to load again, but usually it'll let you use it after you leave the affected module, until the issue returns once more.

Odd Artifacts on Main Menu / Crashes on Game Load

This is an extremely odd vanilla issue which seems to originate from the use of certain graphics cards. The artifacts cause no problems and can be ignored (they go away once a save is loaded), but they may be an indication that you will experience the second issue, which is more troublesome. The latter issue causes the game to constantly CTD when attempting to load a save game, or sometimes even when you enter the "Load Game" menu, even with settings like Frame Buffer Effects disabled.

To resolve the latter issue, if you encounter it, you must start a new game, then load your old save from within the new game you've started—this will solve the issue. Make sure to select "Switch Character" in the save menu so you can see your other character's saves in order to load into them properly.

Character Stuck After Combat

This isn't a bug that modding can fix (or cause), it's an engine bug. It's related to the game's framerate being unsynced with your monitor's refresh rate. If you're on a 60hz monitor, you can just toggle v-sync. If you're 144hz or similar, just set your monitor to 60hz manually for the duration of play and also toggle v-sync.

Swoop Racing

Although I don't recommend staying in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3 long-term, as it can exacerbate loadscreen crashes, sometimes swoop racing can mess up in a way that makes it necessary. If you find your swoop bike floating several meters off the track, exit the game and launch it in compatibility mode for XP SP3. You should be able to race normally, and you can turn off the compatibility mode after the racing segment is over.

Dialogue Skipping

Dialogue skipping is when an NPC's dialogue line is registered by the game, but jumped past immediately as it's switched to—you briefly see the subtitles, then they're gone with no other indication that character was speaking. I often get asked if this is a build problem, but it's not. The builds exacerbate it in some ways by adding more data to the game (it seems to be related to a memory leak in some way), but the biggest culprit by far is the Aspyr patch on Steam, though the issue can happen on any game version. The solution is just to restart your game when it starts happening to you. If it's really annoying for you, you can roll back the Steam patch to the legacypc beta version, which reduces the frequency of the skips in almost all cases (in my most recent run I had no skips at all on the legacypc version).

File Validation

If you are playing on Steam and need to validate the integrity of your local files to try to repair a corrupted basegame, it is not safe to do so due to the way vanilla files are officially loaded in the Steam launcher. If you believe you have a corrupted or otherwise broken base install, you will need to execute a complete wipe and re-install: uninstall your game, then navigate to the game's install folder and delete any remaining contents (frequently, especially on Steam, mod content will not be uninstalled as part of the application's uninstallation, or wiped when the game is reinstalled), reinstall your game, then reinstall the mods. You will also need to start a fresh save in these circumstances, as errors from the prior broken game state will be loaded into your prior save.
